The Kidd Creek copper / zinc mine, located 27km north of Timmins in Ontario, Canada, is the eighth deepest mine and the deepest base metal mine in the world. The mining depth at Kidd Creek extends up to 2,927m beneath the surface. The mine is owned and operated by Xstrata, which acquired it from Falconbridge in 2006. Kidd Creek was discovered in 1963 and witnessed the start of open pit operation in 1966. Underground production started in 1972. The mine is operated with three shafts. WORLD'S LARGEST EXCAVATORS - KOMATSU PC8000!!

The Komatsu PC8000 has an operating weight of up to 710t, making it the fifth largest hydraulic mining excavator. It is available with both shovel and backhoe attachments. The ultra-class mining excavator has a track length of 7.955m on the ground, an overall track width of 9m and a bucket size of 38m³. The arm crowd force and the bucket crowd force are 1,765kN and 1,961kN respectively. The maximum ground level reach of the bucket is 19.37m and the maximum digging depth is 8.4m. The Komatsu PC8000 is powered by two 16-cylinder Komatsu SDA16V160 diesel engines with a power output of 4,020hp at 1,800rpm - Mining Technology.

WORLD'S LARGEST DUMP TRUCKS - BELAZ 75601!!

The Belaz 75601 is the world's 5th largest dump truck with a payload capacity of 396t. It is the latest model of 7560 class of trucks designed by Belaz for carrying loosened rocks at deep open-pit mining sites under different climatic conditions. The gross operating weight of the vehicle is 672.4t. The Belaz 75601 measures 14.9m in length, 9.25m in width and 7.22m in height. The dump truck uses electromechanical transmission with a four-cycle diesel engine, having 20 V-type cylinders. The engine’s power output is 3,750HP. The traction motors and the traction alternator are provided by Siemens and Kato respectively. The top speed of Belaz 75601 is 64km/h - Mining Technology.

Great Noligwa gold mine operated by AngloGold Ashanti in the Vaal River region of South Africa is located 15km south-east of the town of Orkney. It currently ranks as the ninth deepest mine in the world. The average mining depth of Great Noligwa is 2.4km below surface and the maximum mining depth is 2.6km below surface. The mine primarily exploits the Vaal Reef (VR) with a twin shaft system. The Crystalkop Reef (CR) comprises the secondary economic horizon for the mine. WORLD'S LARGEST EXCAVATORS - DEMAG H740!!

With an operating weight of 744t, the Demag H740 OS excavator is the fourth biggest mining excavator. It has been in service since 1999 and was specially designed for the abrasive oil sands works of KMC Mining in Canada. The Demag H740 OS is a front-shovel excavator with a wider car body and trackpad than its predecessors. The shovel loading capacity is 40m³ with a breakout force of 2,320kN. The excavator is powered by two 16-cylinder Cat 3516B diesel engines producing up to 4,000hp at 1,800rpm - Mining Technology.

WORLD'S LARGEST DUMP TRUCKS - LIEBHERR T 284!!

Liebherr T 282C and Liebherr T 284 are two 400t payload capacity ultra-class haul trucks designed and manufactured by Liebherr. The trucks share the distinction of being the second biggest mining trucks with Caterpillar 797F and Terex MT 6300AC. Liebherr’s T 282C is the successor to the 360t capacity T 282B class mining truck. T 284, the latest class of trucks from Liebherr, shares many similar features with the T 282C. Creighton, an underground nickel mine located in the City of Greater Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, is the tenth deepest mine in the world. It is also the world’s deepest nickel mine, with its mining depth extending up to 2.5km. The mine is owned and operated by Vale. The mine was discovered in 1991. The first production from the Creighton open pit started in 1901. Underground operation commenced in 1906. Current mining methods include shrinkage mining and mechanised undercut-and-fill mining. The world's 3rd largest excavator is the Liebherr R9800. It was built by Liebherr at its Colmar factory in France from 2008. The excavator is available with either a shovel attachment, weighing 810t, or a backhoe attachment at 800t. The cab height is 9.91m and the undercarriage measures 10.84m long. Both the backhoe bucket capacity and the shovel capacity is 42m³. The maximum crowd force and breakout force of the shovel is 3,090kN and 2,395kN respectively. The digging and breakout forces of the excavator in backhoe operation is 1,760kN and 1,980kN respectively. WORLD'S LARGEST DUMP TRUCKS - TEREX MT6300AC !!

Made and designed in the United States, Bucyrus International’s Bucyyrus MT6300AC was re-branded as the Terex MT6300AC in 2010. Weighing in at 660 tonnes, it is capable of carrying a payload of 400 tonnes and is nearly 15 metres long and 8 metres high. An electric motor on either side of the axle, fuelled by a 3,750 horsepower four stroke diesel engine, powers the massive vehicle. A notable feature of the MT6300 is a bed heating option, making unloading of certain materials far easier - Fircroft.

Escondida copper mine located in the Atacama Desert, Chile, ranks as the third deepest open-pit operation. Escondida copper mining operation consists of two open-pit mines, namely Escondida pit and Escondida Norte pit. The Escondida pit is 3.9km long, 2.7km wide and 645m deep. The Escondida Norte pit is 525m deep. BHP Billiton is the operator of the mine with 57.5% interest. Rio Tinto holds 30% stake in the mine. Escondida is currently the world’s largest copper producing mine. It produced 1.1Mt of copper in the financial year ending June 2013, which accounts for about five percent of global copper production. Escondida’s recoverable copper reserve was estimated to be more than 32.6Mt as of

WORLD'S LARGEST EXCAVATORS - BUCYRUS RH400!!

The Bucyrus RH400, owned by Caterpillar, is the world’s biggest hydraulic excavator. It was originally launched by Terex in Germany in 1997 but Bucyrus acquired the mining equipment division of Terex in 2010. Bucyrus was acquired by Caterpillar in 2011. The Bucyrus RH400 is a front-shovel excavator weighing approximately 889t. The undercarriage width is 8.6m and the crawler length is 10.98m. The shovel on the excavator has the capacity to hold 45m³ of rock in a single scoop. The arm crowd force and the breakout force of the shovel are up to 3,300kN and 2,400kN, respectively. WORLD'S LARGEST DUMP TRUCKS - CATERPILLAR 797F!!

This ultra-class haul truck has a payload capacity of 400 short tons (363 t). The 20-cylinder, electronic common rail injection, quad turbocharged, air-to-air intercooled, four-stroke diesel engine churns out 4000 hp (2,983 kW) gross, enabling the 797F to maintain the 42mph (68 km/h) top speed while transporting the heavy 363 tonnes of payload. The 797F is equipped with a rear axle-mounted, computer-controlled, seven speed planetary transmission with an integral lock-up torque converter - Caterpillar. Quite a mouthful, but isn't she just spectacular!!
