MINING ROCKSTAR OF THE WEEK – REALGAR!!

Realgar and orpiment are very similar minerals. They are both arsenic sulphides and members of the monoclinic crystal system. They form in the same geological environments and can be closely associated in the same deposits. They have similar physical properties and similar histories of use by man. Because of these similarities, we decided to describe realgar and orpiment in a single article. Realgar and orpiment are both toxic minerals, and contact with them should be avoided. They are not suitable for classroom specimens - "Geology.com".

Shields are sold in packs of 50 units. Kindly visit our website below to place your order and view the full range of products. "https://www.schoolofrockmining.com/covid-19protectivegear"

HAVE YOUR MINING MODELS AUDITED/REFINED!!

The world pandemic has caused almost every mine on earth to run a multitude of mining schedules in a very short time period, in an effort to strategise for the foreseeable future... More than ever, the time is now to ensure your scheduling & simulation models are optimally and correctly set up, and that the numbers make sense... With the model audit/refinement service I check & scrutinise each and every step of your model and adjust or refine the steps as needed to set up an efficient, optimised and updated model. The audited/refined model is then transferred back to you, and the adjustments/refinements/improvements are explained in a comprehensive report. This service is for customers using

MINE PLANNING BASICS FRIDAY – DRILLING IN MEDIUM/LONG TERM SCHEDULES!!

As we know it is difficult enough to figure out the mining sequence of the shovels in a medium to long term mining schedule. It seems there are mining companies that request their mining engineers to figure out the drill paths as well, meaning you have to figure out the sequence for the drills and then the shovels as well. To include the drilling sequence does have it's advantages, but there are disadvantages as well in terms of the time it takes to generate a schedule. That is now assuming your software can even do this. Do the Pro's far outweigh the Cons? Please share your thoughts...

MINING ROCKSTAR OF THE WEEK – QUARTZ!!

Quartz is a chemical compound consisting of one part silicon and two parts oxygen. It is silicon dioxide (SiO2). It is the most abundant mineral found at Earth's surface, and its unique properties make it one of the most useful natural substances. Quartz is the most abundant and widely distributed mineral found at Earth's surface. It is present and plentiful in all parts of the world. It forms at all temperatures. It is abundant in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. It is highly resistant to both mechanical and chemical weathering. This durability makes it the dominant mineral of mountaintops and the primary constituent of beach, river, and desert sand. Quartz is ubiquitous, plenti

HAULSIM PRODUCTIVITY SIMULATIONS!!

Are you 100% confident that your Excel calculations are correct in determining fleet numbers? Are your roads accurately set-up in terms of stop signs, single carriage areas, steep gradients, single-bay dumps? What happens when you have congestion in your pit, how does Excel cater for that? With the HAULSIM simulations you can set up your site accurately to generate realistic results in terms of fleet numbers. The simulations allow you to run a host of possible scenarios, to ensure you understand the flex of your loading & hauling system, and better prepare for possible surprises. Doing a little homework now might just save you years of agony when things don’t pan as out as hoped, and more im

RPMGlobal's XPAC SOLUTIONS products (OPMS & SMS) allows you to do just that - run scenarios instead of suffering in silence. With almost a decade of open pit scheduling experience allow me to help you create options for your company, so you can make informed decisions, and understand the risks with confidence!

WORLD'S BIGGEST ELECTRIC ROPE SHOVELS – BIG BRUTUS!!

Big Brutus is the world's largest electric shovel. It stands 16 stories high amid the fields of rural southeast Kansas. The coal strip mine it helped clear of rock and dirt has long been shut down, and Brutus has been turned into a museum. It took 52 men about 11 months to assemble. The cost, back in 1962: $6.5 million. Big Brutus worked 24 hours a day for 11 years. When the Pittsburg & Midway coal mine shut down in 1974, Big Brutus dug his last pit in West Mineral. They backed Brutus out and parked the giant in the fields. It would have cost too much to dismantle, so they just left it right where it stood. MINE DESIGN!!

How sure are you that your mine designs have the minimum number of switchbacks? Have you tested the impact of having one switchback less, how that reduces your strip ratio and down-the-line costs, not to mention the health & safety of your employees ...? What about your benches & stacks, do they honour the geotechnical slope angles to prevent slope failure...? Your ramp systems on your interim high-walls - do they tie up with your final design and serve as dual access for that rainy day when you need it most...? Difficult questions I know, but prevention is better than cure as they say. Using state-of-the-art mine design software and almost a decade of design experience, I can help you sleep

MINE PLANNING BASICS FRIDAY – MINING LOSS AND DILUTION!!

Found this incredibly interesting and relevant article by Anoush Ebrahim from SRK Consulting where he explains the importance of dilution factors for open pit mining projects, especially in terms of the economy of these projects. In the article he explains that it is common to make general assumptions about dilution instead of quantifying it. I'd like to hear from you guys if you are simply assuming your Loss & Dilution, or have you actually been able to quantify it, and able to maintain these factors on an annual basis... Please share your learnings! Kindly click on the link below for Anoush's article" "https://www.srk.com.hk/files/File/papers/dilution_factor_openpit_a_ebrahimi.pdf"

MINING ROCKSTAR OF THE WEEK – PYROXENE!!

Pyroxenes are a group of dark-coloured rock-forming minerals found in igneous and metamorphic rocks throughout the world. They form under conditions of high temperature and/or high pressure. Augite, diopside, jadeite and spodumene are four of the best-known members of the pyroxene group; however, the pyroxene group has many other members. Pyroxene minerals are defined by their chemical composition and crystal structure. Their generalized chemical composition is described by the formula and comments below - "Geology.com"
