MINE PLANNING BASICS FRIDAY!!

Seeing as there's quite a few open pit mines transgressing to underground, I thought we could have a look at the basics...

HAVE YOUR MINING MODELS AUDITED/REFINED!!

The world pandemic has caused almost every mine on earth to run a multitude of mining schedules in a very short time period, in an effort to strategise for the foreseeable future... More than ever, the time is now to ensure your scheduling & simulation models are optimally and correctly set up, and that the numbers make sense... With the model audit/refinement service I check & scrutinise each and every step of your model and adjust or refine the steps as needed to set up an efficient, optimised and updated model. The audited/refined model is then transferred back to you, and the adjustments/refinements/improvements are explained in a comprehensive report. This service is for customers using

MINING ROCKSTAR OF THE WEEK – SCAPOLITE!!

Scapolite is a name used for a group of aluminosilicate minerals that includes meionite, marialite, and silvialite. Meionite and marialite are end members of a solid solution series. Silvialite is a mineral that is very similar to meionite. These minerals have very similar compositions, crystal structures, and physical properties. They cannot be easily distinguished from one another in the field or during hand specimen examination in a laboratory. The name "scapolite" is a term used for convenient communication. These minerals are found in small quantities in some metamorphic and igneous rocks. Their compositions are compared in the table below - "Geology.com".

HAULSIM PRODUCTIVITY SIMULATIONS!!

Are you 100% confident that your Excel calculations are correct in determining fleet numbers? Are your roads accurately set-up in terms of stop signs, single carriage areas, steep gradients, single-bay dumps? What happens when you have congestion in your pit, how does Excel cater for that? With the HAULSIM simulations you can set up your site accurately to generate realistic results in terms of fleet numbers. The simulations allow you to run a host of possible scenarios, to ensure you understand the flex of your loading & hauling system, and better prepare for possible surprises. Doing a little homework now might just save you years of agony when things don’t pan as out as hoped, and more im

MINING METHOD OF THE WEEK - BLOCK CAVING!!

Block caving is essentially the underground version of open-pit mining. It’s the only underground mining method that can reach similar production rates to surface mining operations, up to over 100,000 tonnes per day. The method involves undermining an ore body, then allowing it to collapse under its own weight. The ore body is drilled and blasted and the collapsed ore is removed through a haulage access, and as more material is removed the ore body caves in. This mining method is useful because it allows for huge volumes of material to be mined at relatively low costs, which makes lower grade deposits economical to turn into mines or new pits. Many large-scale open-pit operations have plans

MINE SCHEDULING!!

Know the feeling... when you're losing precious time because of fighting the software instead of running iterations and scenarios... You will never have confidence in your schedule if you do not have 2 or 3 scenarios to test the flex of your system. Your superiors want a number of options, not just one answer. RPMGlobal's XPAC SOLUTIONS products (OPMS & SMS) allows you to do just that - run scenarios instead of suffering in silence. With almost a decade of open pit scheduling experience allow me to help you create options for your company, so you can make informed decisions, and understand the risks with confidence!

MINING ROCKSTAR OF THE WEEK – RUTILE!!

Rutile is a titanium oxide mineral with a chemical composition of TiO2. It is found in igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks throughout the world. Rutile also occurs as needle-shaped crystals in other minerals. Rutile has a high specific gravity and is often concentrated by stream and wave action in “heavy mineral sands” that exist today in both onshore and offshore deposits. Much of the world’s rutile production is mined from these sands. Rutile is used as an ore of titanium, it is crushed into a white powder that is used as a pigment in paints, and it is processed for use in a multitude of products. Networks of needle-shaped rutile crystals produce the “eyes” and “stars” in many gems,

MINE DESIGN!!

How sure are you that your mine designs have the minimum number of switchbacks? Have you tested the impact of having one switchback less, how that reduces your strip ratio and down-the-line costs, not to mention the health & safety of your employees ...? What about your benches & stacks, do they honour the geotechnical slope angles to prevent slope failure...? Your ramp systems on your interim high-walls - do they tie up with your final design and serve as dual access for that rainy day when you need it most...? Difficult questions I know, but prevention is better than cure as they say. Using state-of-the-art mine design software and almost a decade of design experience, I can help you sleep

The copper-silver mine is one of the three mines owned and operated by KGHM in the Legnica-Glogów copper basin of Poland. Lubin mine has been operational since 1968. It is an underground mining operation extracting ore from the Lubin-Malomice deposit discovered in 1957. It is comprised nine working sections at a depth of 610m to 850m. Room-and-pillar method with hydraulic backfill is used for the mining. The extracted ore is sent to the ore e

IS YOUR PIT OPTIMISATION ADJUSTED FOR THE CURRENT ECONOMY??

The mining industry is notorious for its volatile nature as commodity prices fluctuate. History shows that it's the companies that can adjust to the market changes the quickest that lead the pack. Mining on a 5-year old mine design that was based on a Whittle shell all those years ago can mean you're either leaving value in the ground, or more detrimental, you're now mining in areas where profitability is going South... With almost a decade of Whittle open pit optimisation experience I can help you dust off that old Whittle model, and make sure your mine is set up to run at maximum profitability under current economic conditions... Doesn't hurt to make sure now does it...
