WELL DONE IKE!!

This gentleman really took on the bull by the horns by completing training on RPMGlobal's Stratigraphic Metals Solution (SMS) as well as Geovia's Surpac. The training was conducted on the client's own dataset, which has the advantage that not only did Ike receive the necessary skill-set to build mining schedules, the client now has a schedule that can be used and further developed. Really proud of this calm and collected mining engineer!!

MINE DESIGN!!

How sure are you that your mine designs have the minimum number of switchbacks? Have you tested the impact of having one switchback less, how that reduces your strip ratio and down-the-line costs, not to mention the health & safety of your employees ...? What about your benches & stacks, do they honour the geotechnical slope angles to prevent slope failure...? Your ramp systems on your interim high-walls - do they tie up with your final design and serve as dual access for that rainy day when you need it most...? Difficult questions I know, but prevention is better than cure as they say. Using state-of-the-art mine design software and almost a decade of design experience, I can help you sleep

MINING ROCKSTAR OF THE WEEK – MONAZITE!!

Monazite is a rare phosphate mineral with a chemical composition of (Ce,La,Nd,Th)(PO4,SiO4). It usually occurs in small isolated grains, as an accessory mineral in igneous and metamorphic rocks such as granite, pegmatite, schist, and gneiss. These grains are resistant to weathering and become concentrated in soils and sediments downslope from the host rock. When in high enough concentrations, they are mined for their rare earth and thorium content - "Geology.com".

IS YOUR PIT OPTIMISATION ADJUSTED FOR THE CURRENT ECONOMY??

The mining industry is notorious for its volatile nature as commodity prices fluctuate. History shows that it's the companies that can adjust to the market changes the quickest that lead the pack. Mining on a 5-year old mine design that was based on a Whittle shell all those years ago can mean you're either leaving value in the ground, or more detrimental, you're now mining in areas where profitability is going South... With almost a decade of Whittle open pit optimisation experience I can help you dust off that old Whittle model, and make sure your mine is set up to run at maximum profitability under current economic conditions... Doesn't hurt to make sure now does it...

SHOWCASE COAL MINE OF THE WEEK – MT ARTHUR!!

The Mt Arthur coal mine located in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, Australia, had recoverable coal reserves of 591Mt (292Mt proven and 299Mt probable) as of June 2019. Owned and operated by BHP Billiton, the mining operation consists of mainly two open-cut mining areas, namely the Northern Open Cut and the Southern Open Cut. More than 20 coal seams are mined at Mt Arthur. The mining operation was started in 1968. Mt Arthur coal mine produces thermal coal for local and international customers in the energy sector. Its annual coal production is more than 18Mt. The estimated reserve life of the mine is 35 years - "Miningtechnology.com". To view the mine in Google Maps, kindly click

MINERAL PROCESSING METHOD OF THE WEEK - OPTICAL SEPARATION!!

This process is used for the concentration of particles that have sufficiently different colours (the best contrast being black and white) to be detected by the naked eye. In addition, electro-optic detectors collect data on the responses of minerals when exposed to infrared, visible, and ultraviolet light. The same principle, only using gamma radiation, is called radiometric separation - Encyclopaedia Britannica.

MINING ROCKSTAR OF THE WEEK – MOLYBDENITE!!

Molybdenite is a rare mineral composed of molybdenum and sulphur, with a chemical composition of MoS2. It occurs in igneous and metamorphic rocks as grey hexagonal crystals and foliated masses with a metallic lustre. Molybdenite is the most important ore of molybdenum and often contains minor amounts of rhenium which are often produced as a by-product. Molybdenite has physical properties that often cause it to be confused with graphite. Both of these minerals are grey to silver in colour, have a very low hardness, and occur in hexagonal crystals or foliated masses. Both minerals have a layered atomic structure with planes of extreme weakness. This gives them a slippery feel and makes them va

The course covers the whole mining industry spectrum from geology, mine planning, min

MINERAL PROCESSING METHOD OF THE WEEK - CRUSHING!!

Some ores occur in nature as mixtures of discrete mineral particles, such as gold in gravel beds and streams and diamonds in mines. These mixtures require little or no crushing, since the valuables are recoverable using other techniques (breaking up placer material in log washers, for instance). Most ores, however, are made up of hard, tough rock masses that must be crushed before the valuable minerals can be released. In order to produce a crushed material suitable for use as mill feed (100 percent of the pieces must be less than 10 to 14 millimetres, or 0.4 to 0.6 inch, in diameter), crushing is done in stages. In the primary stage, the devices used are mostly jaw crushers with openings as
