MINING METHOD OF THE WEEK - SUBLEVEL LONGHOLE!!

This bulk underground mining method involves mining large amounts of material from a single stope – similar to cut and fill, this method starts at the bottom of a level and moves upward. Ore is removed from the bottom, and then more ore is blasted from a higher level that falls to the same level to be removed, with the process repeating up the ore body. The supporting walls need to be very strong in order to support the large underground openings that will be created by this process - New Pacific Metals Corp.

Andalusite is a rock-forming mineral that is mined for use in high-temperature refractories. Gem-quality specimens are cut into faceted gems and cabochons. Andalusite forms during the regional metamorphismof shale. It is found in schist and gneiss at some present and ancient convergent plate boundaries where the rocks have been exposed to the temperatures and pressures needed for its formation. SHOWCASE MINE OF THE WEEK - SAVUKA GOLD MINE!!

Savuka gold mine, also located in the West Wits region of South Africa and operated by AngloGold Ashanti, is the third deepest mine in the world. The mine exploits the gold contained reefs at a depth of more than 3.7km. The mining method at Savuka was recently converted from longwall to sequential grid mining. Savuka shares a common processing plant with the TauTona mine. The shafts and infrastructure at Savuka were damaged by a seismic event in 2008. The mining operations were, however, completely restored in 2011. Savuka produced 37,000 oz of gold in 2012. The mine was left with 0.56 million oz of gold reserves by the end of that year. The Komatsu PC5500-6 is the ninth biggest hydraulic mining excavator in service, with an operating weight of up to 495t with the shovel attachment. WORLD'S LARGEST DUMP TRUCKS - HITACHI EH5000AC!!

The Hitachi EH5000AC-3 has a payload capacity of 326t, making it the 10th biggest dump truck in the world. It is Hitachi’s latest and largest rigid frame dump truck and was introduced at MINExpo International 2012 in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2012. The gross machine operating weight of Hitachi EH5000AC-3 is 551t. The overall length of the truck is 15.51m. The width and loading height are 8.6m and 7.41m respectively. The truck uses the low emission Cummins QSKTTA60-CE diesel engine with 16 cylinders. The rated power output of the four-cycle engine is 2,850HP. The vehicle uses Hitachi’s IGBT AC electric drive system and runs at speeds of up to 56km/h - Mining Technology.

MINING METHOD OF THE WEEK - SHRINKAGE STOPING!!

The shrinkage stoping method is similar to cut and fill, but instead of removing the ore after blasting and backfilling, the initial broken ore is left in the void to create a working platform for the next level (and to support the wall stability of the stope). After all the planned levels have been blasted, then all of the ore is removed for processing. This method is very selective and keeps dilution low, but requires many active stopes because ore is not removed from each mining area until completion – meaning longer lead times for ore to get to the process plant compared to cut and fill operations - New Pacific Metals Corp.

The Driefontein mine, owned by Sibanye Stillwater, is located near Carletonville in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. The mine lies within the West Wits Line Goldfield of the Witwatersrand Basin. It is currently the fourth deepest mine in the world with its depth extended up to 3.4km. The Driefontein mine operation could be traced back to 1952. The mine consists of eight producing shaft systems extracting ore from three reefs, namely Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR), Carbon Leader Reef (CLR) and the Middelvlei Reef. The board & pillar mining method consists of driving a series of narrow roads, separated by blocks of solid coal, parallel to one another, and connecting them by another set of narrow parallel road ways driven nearly at right angles to the first set. The coal pillars formed are extracted after the development of the mine leasehold and this later stage of extracting coal from pillars is known as depillaring - Mining Funda.

Moab Khotsong gold mine is one of AngloGold Ashanti’s Vaal River operations in South Africa. The mine is located around 180km south-west of Johannesburg near the towns of Orkney and Klerksdorp. The mine is in production since 2003. It currently ranks as the sixth deepest mine in the world, with its mining depth ranging between 2.6km and 3.054km below surface. The mine exploits the Vaal Reef (VR) through three mining layers, namely the Top, Middle and Lower Mines. Moab Khotsong employs a scattered mining method with an integrated backfill support system.
