MINE PLANNING BASICS FRIDAY – DRILLING IN MEDIUM/LONG TERM SCHEDULES!!

As we know it is difficult enough to figure out the mining sequence of the shovels in a medium to long term mining schedule. It seems there are mining companies that request their mining engineers to figure out the drill paths as well, meaning you have to figure out the sequence for the drills and then the shovels as well. To include the drilling sequence does have it's advantages, but there are disadvantages as well in terms of the time it takes to generate a schedule. That is now assuming your software can even do this. Do the Pro's far outweigh the Cons? Please share your thoughts...

MINING ROCKSTAR OF THE WEEK – ZOISITE!!

Zoisite and clinozoisite are minerals that form during the regional metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. In those environments they are found in massive form and as prismatic crystals in veins that cut schists and marbles. They are also found as crystals in pegmatites that form on the margins of igneous bodies. The two minerals are dimorphs - they share the same chemical composition but have a different crystal structure. Zoisite is the orthorhombic form of Ca2Al3(SiO4)(Si2O7)O(OH) and clinozoisite is the monoclinic form. The minerals have extremely similar physical properties and can be very difficult to tell apart in hand specimens unless

SHOWCASE MINE OF THE WEEK - CATOCA DIAMOND MINE!!

Catoca diamond mine in Angola ranks as the fifth biggest diamond mine in the world. The Catoca open-pit located near Saurimo, around 840km east of Luanda, is estimated to contain up to 130Mct of mineable diamonds. The diamond mine is operated by Sociedade Mineira de Catoca, a joint venture of Angola’s state-owned diamond company Endiama (32.8%), Alrosa (32.8), as well as China and state oil producer Sonangol (18%) and Odebrecht of Brazil (16.4%). The mine has been operational since 1993. Catoca mine produced 6.5Mct of diamonds from around 10Mt of ore in 2012, which accounted for about 70% of Angola’s total diamond output. The open-pit currently operating at a depth exceeding 200m is schedule

WORLD'S TOP 10 BULLDOZERS - ACCO SUPER BULLDOZER!!

The Acco Super Bulldozer is the largest and most powerful tracked bulldozer ever made. It was built in Italy by the Umberto ACCO company. The Acco super bulldozer was constructed mainly of Caterpillar parts, however many other components were specially adapted. The dozer blade, for example, is bigger than anything Caterpillar has ever made. This bulldozer has a gross weight of 183 tons and is powered by two 675 hp (503 kW) Caterpillar engines. The super bulldozer has a blade that is 23 feet (7.0 m) wide and 9 feet (2.7 m) high, whilst the total length of the Bulldozer is over 40 feet (12 m), from the tip of the blade to the ripper on the rear. The ripper alone is about 10 feet (3.0 m) tall,

MINERAL PROCESSING METHOD OF THE WEEK - MAGNETIC SEPARATION!!

Magnetic separation is based on the differing degrees of attraction exerted on various minerals by magnetic fields. Success requires that the feed particles fall within a special size spectrum (0.1 to 1 millimeter). With good results, strongly magnetic minerals such as magnetite, franklinite, and pyrrhotite can be removed from gangue minerals by low-intensity magnetic separators. High-intensity devices can separate oxide iron ores such as limonite and siderite as well as iron-bearing manganese, titanium, and tungsten ores and iron-bearing silicates - Encyclopaedia Britannica.

FREE ONLINE HAULSIM & TALPAC-3D COURSES FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS!!

If you’re a mining engineering student at a university, your luck is in. The kind folks at RPMGlobal are giving free access to the HAULSIM and TALPAC-3D online courses. Participants will learn how to simulate productivity and cost of equipment, through pre-configured workshops designed around real-life scenarios. The learning outcomes of the course are: · Navigate around the software · Access the product’s help · Create and update a mine haulage simulation · Import data into the simulation · Understand the equipment library · How to use dashboards and reports · Analyse the impacts of changes to the simulation Send me an email at: info@schoolofrockmining.com if you’d like to do the course!

MINING ROCKSTAR OF THE WEEK – ZIRCON!!

Zircon is a zirconium silicate mineral with a chemical composition of ZrSiO4. It is common throughout the world as a minor constituent of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. Zircon is a popular gemstone that has been used for nearly 2000 years. Today it serves as a modern birthstone for the month of December. Zircon occurs in a wide range of colors and has a brightness and fire that rivals those of diamond. Colorless zircon is sometimes used as a lower-cost alternative for diamond. Zircon should not be confused with cubic zirconia, which is a man-made material. Zircon is present in most soils and clastic sediments. Zircon-rich sediments are mined and the recovered zircon is used to

SHOWCASE MINE OF THE WEEK - VENETIA DIAMOND MINE!!

Venetia diamond mine located 80km from Musina in Limpopo Province of South Africa ranks as the world’s sixth largest diamond mine. Venetia’s diamond reserves as of December 2012 stood at more than 102Mct. The open pit reserves are estimated to be 32.8Mct (33.6Mt grading 0.975ct/t diamond) and the underground diamond reserves are estimated at 70Mct (91.4Mt grading 0.765ct/t diamond). Venetia is the largest diamond producing mine in South Africa. It produced 3.066Mct of diamonds from 5.618Mt of ore in 2012. The deposit comprises of 12 kimberlite pipes. The mine is owned and operated by De Beers and has been in production since 1992. The open-pit operation is expected to continue up to 2021, af

Ranked at no 2 in the world, the Komatsu D575A uses Komatsu’s SA12V170E (12-cylinder turbocharged) diesel engine. It has a displacement of 46.3 l, a fuel tank capacity of 2100 liters, and three forward and three reverse speeds, and a machine length of 11.72 meters. D575A-3SD Main technical data: * Maximum power: 858kW (1167 hp) / 1800rpm * Working weight: 153 tonnes - Mega Machines.

MINING ROCKSTAR OF THE WEEK – VARISCITE!!

Variscite is a rare hydrated aluminum phosphate mineral with a chemical composition of AlPO4•2H2O. It is usually green in color, ranging from yellowish green to bluish green. It does not have any significant industrial use. Variscite specimens of exceptional color and appearance are often cut into gemstones, used to make small sculptures, or used as an ornamental stone in small projects - "Geology.com".
